I am a songwriter from Cork, Ireland, and I play a few different styles of music, mostly folk based and of an acoustic nature. I started messing with the guitar in the early eighties and by the late eighties I was dabbling in song writing. I had written a few small poems in my early school days so the lyrical side of writing was sown in me early on and a good English poetry teacher in later school years probably sparked that love for words to life again, though I can_ t say I was ever a big reader, I liked the word play in songs. From an early age I was listening to my parents, relations and friends singing all kinds of songs at social occasions, so singing came very naturally to me.
So I kept on learning about music and writing songs and the album ’THAT SAME OLD SIN’ was recorded in 1999 and released in 2000. The most popular song from that album was probably ‘THE POSEY SONG’ though everyone has their own particular favourite!
John O Connor does a few great sax solos on a few of the songs, Des Field performed miracles on drums, Noel Barrett played cool bass, Flor O’Mahony did backing vocals and I did everything else myself.
The album was recorded on Fostex DMT8 8 track hard drive recorder using AKG 3000 condenser mics, Robyn Robins mastered the album at MAD.
I recorded ‘BLACK IS THE COLOUR’ in 2004, I had learned a lot of these songs earlier on whilst teaching myself to play the guitar, I_ m still learning ( If you intend to learn to play any instrument the right teacher will make all the difference)
Anyway, people love to hear a few Irish traditional style songs and I put a few I liked together on ‘ BLACK IS THE COLOUR’.
The album ’SEARCHING FOR A HAPPY SOUND’ was recorded over a short period of time in April-May 2008. All the FATHER TED songs are on this album. I played everything on this album except for backing vocals by Jim Carroll and Flor O’Mahony. All of the songs were live takes, guitar and vocals recorded at the same time, with some other instruments added later, the emphasis placed on trying to create an energy or life in the songs which sometimes gets lost in the overproduction of a recording.
I used a Boss BR 900 to record the album to compact flash card as I was finding hard drives to be very jumpy and unreliable to work with, having good takes ruined by dodgy gear would do your head in, I used the AKG 3000 mics again and mastered the album myself on the BR 900.
The songs I write must in some way emanate from all the different types of music I have listened to over the years, from blues to traditional Irish music and song, from country to rock ’n roll, beat and reggae, from jazz singers to folkies and back. I like a lot of different styles of music, especially anything acoustic. I think I would find it difficult to label myself with one tag or another as I have written and played songs in a few different genres, so I won't, I write whatever comes into my head.
All the songs are available for download on the website, have a browse through the sample clips,
